I am pleased as punch that my artistic niece Laura has been chosen to exhibit some of her work at a New Designers event in London. Textiles don’t tend to get much of a look-in when it comes to art forms celebrated on a massive scale. I suspect Laura, and her colleagues in the graduating class of 2017 – Norwich University of the Arts, might be in a position to change all that.
Seth Godin, cultural and business guru, defines art as follows: Art is a human act, a generous contribution, something that might not work, and it is intended to change the recipient for the better, often causing a connection to happen.
The above description speaks to me. I strongly suspect it also appeals to Laura, along with other artists out there who spend their time connecting, describing their worlds through the lens of a camera, or the design of a fabric, or the shape of a building. We are the lucky ones; we have the space to ‘do art.’ Long may that continue.
