I may be some time…

Things take a while, sometimes. Some years ago, under the name of Darcus Knight, I wrote a few chapters of a book. I put the project down. And thus far, I haven’t picked it up again. I am pretty sure the time will come when I give writing some priority again. There’s no rush – right?

What prompted me to bring this subject up, however, was finding some old material I used as inspiration back in the day. The quote below comes from the classic TV series X-Files. At one juncture, Mulder says to his erstwhile partner, Scully, something that still resonates with me all this time forward:

‘Whatever happened to playing a hunch, Scully? The element of surprise, random acts of unpredictability? If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen, or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorised or easily referenced.’

Someone not easily referenced was the late, great broadcaster and social commentator (in my humble opinion), Darcus Howe. A man of some strong opinion, fiery resolve and forceful personality, amongst other things, I immediately took to the name Darcus, when seeing him first on television. Daft as it seems now, I chose Darcus as a pen name, and ‘Night’ seemed to neatly follow to complete the moniker.

I predict, one day, I will finish writing Every Freak an Angel. Then again, who knows what I might create before the day I pick up a pen again? My late father-in-law, might have replied in answer to such a question, ‘Who knows? God knows. And he won’t split for under a tenner.’

Like my own late father, my late father-in-law sure did exhibit some cracking good down to earth sense at times.
